An Ohio teacher felt that her minority student hadn’t done his part of the group work and declared that his teammates would lynch him.

This is never funny in any context. EVER. There’s far too much history connected to any word or phrase near lynching with minority students. Please be socially conscience and don’t accidentally find yourself into this situation.
